30 Short-Form Hooks That Actually Work

7 min read

The hook still decides everything. Platforms are now measuring retention in the first second or two, not the first three — so the opening line of your video or post has to earn the next line immediately. Here are the formulas actually performing right now.

The transformation hook

"I went from [bad number] to [good number] in [timeframe] using [thing]" is consistently the highest-converting hook format across platforms right now. It works because it promises a specific, provable outcome instead of a vague benefit.

Try: "I went from 200 followers to 20K in 4 months posting one type of video." / "I went from spending 6 hours a week on captions to 15 minutes." / "I went from zero replies to fully booked in 60 days."

The identity call

"If you're a [specific audience], this is the [thing] you didn't know you needed." Specificity outperforms reach — calling out a narrow audience by name makes the exact right people stop scrolling, even with a smaller total audience.

Try: "If you're a new creator under 1,000 followers, watch this before you post again." / "If you've ever frozen up mid-caption, this is for you."

The contrarian truth

"Most people get [topic] completely wrong." / "Stop doing [common thing] if you want [result]." These work because they create a small argument in the viewer's head — they either agree and want validation, or disagree and want to argue in the comments. Either way, they watch.

The insider secret

"Here's what nobody tells you about [topic]." This hook works because it promises information asymmetry — the sense that you're about to learn something that isn't common knowledge, even if the content itself is fairly simple once you get there.

The technical rule that matters more than the words

Whatever hook you use, open with the payoff first, then explain — don't build up to it. And cut or change something on screen every half-second to one-and-a-half seconds for the first five seconds; pattern breaks keep people watching more than a strong opening line alone. The algorithm is explicitly rewarding longer watch sessions and authentic, native-feeling delivery over polished, ad-like openings.
